No software endorsement here.
A while ago I listed a few of my favourite software programs - from across the 20 years since Windows 3.1 and a 486 processor were once considered hi-tech. Well, I received an e-mail offering a free copy of a current program if I mentioned it.
We all like something for free...
Except... What do I know about recommending software? Recently I ran across a comment thread where someone sneered at people still using Windows XP as an operating sytem. Hey, I still use Windows XP. My (updated) hard drive is under 200Mb, and doesn't match the current connection design. There's no DVD player in my mid-tower. Mid-tower.
And the keyboard, natch., is IBM - chunky finger widths, weighs a ton, and manufactured (is that still a word?) in pre-NAFTA Mexico. Gamepad or motion detector? I got a used 1-button joystick just waiting to discover a 9-pin PC-keyboard connector, btw. (And my TV has a '3'.)
Touting a product or service when my own related position is clearly out-of-date - wouldn't be so fine with me. Not that I would be that interested anyway. I gripe and bellow as on some days I see fit. And I applaud, yes, when I genuinely feel moved to.
Is there a cost? Perhaps. Then again, little so far in MY life has ever been really worth holding onto. Except for my soul. And that - on a dusty shelf - is still worth its full, and unmarketed, price.
