Rae's Jewish attack-ad Photo.
Currently, the Conservative Party of Canada has been airing a political attack ad against the interim leader of the 3rd place Liberal Party - and former Premier of Ontario - Bob Rae.
Fine enough. Regardless of political stance: I agree with using his recorded likeness and public interview(s). However! Then the ad itself ends upon a particularly unsavoury screen capture.
Photography buffs will know what is meant by a cool or warm lighting effect. As with previous ads of this sort, its subject - MP Rae - is depicted in a 'starkly' B&W image.
Except, does this ending image too closely mimic the stylings from Nazi Germany? That's how I (an average, non-Jewish, voter) perceive it.
Bob Rae, though, happens to be a person of Jewish family and heritage. When I see this attack ad's end shot - with an added, oversized, Conservative Party Logo situated over his heart - it only reminds me of those olden photos of oppressed Jews in Germany and elsewhere back in the pre-WWII 1930s. That was when numerous European Jews, preceding the concentration camp horrors, were forced to wear a sizable identity badge whenever they were publicly outside.
A photo editing blunder? Perhaps.
Except then look at the font-type used throughout the ad. It, too, harkens back as a gapy and old-timey typewriter font style!
Canada is a very multi-cultural society. We're never going to always 'get' every turn of phrase or slight nuance. But this isn't a lessor known, or an obscure, cultural point. That ending photo image feels intentionally produced.
Generally, I favour the Conservative Party. (IMO) This particular attack ad deserves criticism.
